      GE在全世界100多个国家开展业务，员工超过300，000人。2002年销售收入1317亿美元, 利润151亿美元。杰夫.伊梅尔特先生自2001年9月7日起接替杰克•韦尔奇担任 GE公司的董事长及首席执行官。
   通用电气公司的历史可追溯到托马斯·爱迪生，他于1878年创立了爱迪生电灯公司。1892年，爱迪生通用电气公司和汤姆森－休斯顿电气公司合并，成立了通用电气公司(GE)。GE是道·琼斯工业指数1896年设立以来唯一至今仍在指数榜上的公司。
   GE以其高科技的产品、以客户为中心的服务、先进的管理和人力培训理念、和成功的多元化业务模式著称于世。GE连续多年报被《财富》杂志评为“全球最受推崇的公司”和“全美最受推崇的公司”。
通用电气在中国
    早在1906年，GE就开始发展同中国的贸易，是在中国最活跃、最具影响力的外国公司之一。1908年,GE在沈阳建立了第一家灯泡厂。1934年，GE买下了慎昌洋行，开始在中国提供进口电气设备的安装和维修服务。1979年，GE与中华人民共和国重建贸易关系。1991年, 第一家合资企业GE航卫医疗系统有限公司在北京成立。
    迄今为止，GE的所有8个工业产品集团已在中国开展业务。GE在中国拥有9000多名员工，建立了36个包括合资和独自企业的经营实体,总投资15多亿美元。
    除了业务投资，GE还致力于做好企业公民，积极参与各种公益活动，如在中国的教育机构设立奖学金。另外，GE员工的志愿者组织GE Elfun也在香港、北京、上海和广州成立了分会，积极开展社区服务、保护环境等志愿活动。

　　The company traces its beginnings to Thomas A. Edison, who established Edison Electric Light Company in 1878. In 1892, a merger of Edison General Electric Company and Thomson-Houston Electric Company created General Electric Company. GE is the only company listed in the Dow Jones Industrial Index today that was also included in the original index in 1896.

GE in China
　　GE started doing business in China as early as 1906 and was considered one of the most active foreign companies in the country at the time. In 1908, the first GE light plant was built in Shenyang. GE acquired Anderson, Meyer & Co. in 1934 and started to provide installation and repair services of imported electric equipment in China. GE resumed trade with People’s Republic of China in 1979. It opened GE Hangwei Medical Systems Co., Ltd in Beijing, its first joint venture in China in 1991. 
　　All of GE’s industrial businesses have set up operations in China with more than 11,000 employees. GE has established over 40 legal entities in China with total investment over US$1.5 billion. Its financial services sector is seeking business opportunities as WTO opens China market. 
The sales revenue of GE in China is $2.6 billion in 2003. 
　　Besides business commitment, GE continues to act as a good corporate citizen in China, supporting Chinese educational institutions with scholarship programs and contributing to the communities where it operates. Elfun, the GE volunteer organization with chapters in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai Guangzhou, Dalian and Hong Kong, creates and participates in such activities as community services and environmental protection.
